I cheered for Kathryn Bigelow in 2009 and I still do. Zero Dark Thirty is a film that pulses unconventionality, elusiveness, hard paced sequences, and does not leave out the subtleness needed to make it feel real.

Mark Boal’s intelligent writing contains dialogue that works the brain and the suspense.

It’s a cloak and daggers story that spans a decade of terror and secrecy.

The Walking Dead Video Game: A great way of telling a tale!

Story; its what drives the game forward and the only way to play. Although the main character, Lee, is who you control; in actuality you control the story more so. Decision upon decision, through good action or the lack of it, the story will progress with results based on what you decide.This is where character comes into major, major play. From the very beginning you really don’t decide for yourself, nor Lee, but for the life of an 8 year old girl he finds and takes upon himself to protect. This is the key thing. You may or not begin to notice as you play, that from then on, every choice you make is for Lee and Clementine’s relationship. The bond they develop becomes a great deal to you, the player..and it becomes the only hope Lee and Clementine can hold onto, together…in the f*cked up, shitty mess their world has become. This is where the game shines gloriously and gruesomely.

Indeed, its a great story captured with much character and theme. Its placed right in the middle of a survival-drama setting that throws wave after wave of disastrous situations in which you must make crucial decisions, sometimes with so little time, it feels like real panic and instinct maybe the only thing you can trust to make those decisions. Decisions and consequences. Safety or sacrifice? Trust or betrayal? The bad decisions or the ‘not-so’ bad ones? All of this is round up into the 5 Episodes of The Walking Dead series developed by Telltale Games and it truly does leave you pondering, “Was that the wrong choice, or did i make the right choice in the eyes of my companions, or more so, in the eyes of this little girl?” Those moments of internal struggle are what makes the game surpass the screen and the controls. In those moments, you literally question yourself and very few games burden you with such an obstacle. You may get to the point where you no longer want to make anymore choices because you may feel deep down that whatever choice you make; it will still lead to even the slightest bit of heartache. It’s that good, narratively.

The game isn’t filled with time killing extras, or environments that lead you away from what must be done. The little “puzzles” you do have to solve, do not hinder you much either. Its a ‘point and click adventure’ with more story than ‘game’. Because of this, its perfect for story lovers to play through, especially ‘non-gamer’ fans of The Walking Dead series, even if the game is its own story within the series. It really is one of those games you can actually enjoy just by watching a friend play through it. As the developers treated like a TV series in video game form, so too can the player and spectator.

To me, if anything, the game has deeply won me over with Lee and Clementine. Their story is one i won’t soon forget and one… i helped shape <3

Farcry 3: Review/Survivial Guide

After 25 or so hours, I finished and concluded my game with FarCry 3. It has actually been a while since i have enjoyed a good shooter all its way through. FC3 surprised me.

Even with character flaws and the minor aspects of the game that didn’t really attract me. I was able to go through most of the gameplay and its story… And it was a fantastic voyage indeed!

There was a lot of doubt early in the story as it began with Jason Brody (the main character) being uninviting and very dull. It was his counter part protagonist Vaas (Pictured) who was too ecstatically chaotic to make me stop playing. Top notch voice acting coupled with erratic animation and dialogue made him perfect. His character was very believable. Bent, fucked up, believable.

As I progressed, the plot started doing what few games end up doing to the main character. Jason started changing. His beliefs and where his values lay, completely change. His struggle against Vaas is a reflection of this and his sanity. Sanity BECOMES the theme and i got hooked. From then, i had to finish the game.

Overall it was great, but i don’t know if most know that this game is a Shooter mixed with Survival grafts that can keep you very busy in-game. The Island you play on is a huge open world that lets you explore and must survive in. I decided to hand down 5 quick tips to help your survival. Take them… as they can help your single player story progress…

Capture those airwaves! - The Island map is not revealed. And you would think it could be easy as just walking into a store and buying a map to help you get your bearings, but nope. You must look for Radio towers on the island, climb them, and turn them on for this. Each has its own little platforming challenge to get to the top. Radio towers will only reveal a portion of the map, but they are crucial so you can know where you are, know the roads, and know whats around you. Revealing parts of the map will reveal hunting game locations, town settlements, topography, and much more. As a bonus, liberating more and more towers will also unlock weapons at the gun shop for free! This will add much needed variety to your initial arsenal :D
The Hunt is on…- Jason Brody starts off with the capacity to carry only ONE gun, very little ammo, small munitions, and a limited number of items. This is a pain, as you will very fast need more of all of this. Crafting more weapon holsters and larger bags to hold more survival goodies is a must. To do this, you must hunt for animal skins. You can hunt anything from yummy helpless goats to dangerous rare jungle cats, so be prepared for what your are hunting. Ferociously asshole animals can kill your very quickly, even the ones that don’t look difficult to take down. Cassowaries, these Ostrich looking birds, took me down to rapeville numerous times. If you take the time to pick up some Yellow Plant Leaves, you can craft a neat-o drug that heightens your sense of smell, and helps your gain an initiative against the wildlife around you.
Capture enemy outposts- The Island is a complete pirate shit state. Enemies are everywhere at first and if you want to do anything without these pirate posers tailing you or spotting you, you will have to minimize their numbers. Each enemy outpost you capture will remove enemy occupation from a given area, for the most part. Taking these strongholds is all in how you want to do so. Your handy camera can help you mark your opposing numbers. Remember, if you are detected by going gun-f*ck-nuts on these settlements, they can sound alarm for reinforcements and reinforcements will continue to come if you do not kill everyone. This can be poor foreplay on your ammo and thus, your moneys. My approach, of course, was stealth. Either way though, the best thing to do FIRST is to disable the alarms. A distraction is best for that because these moron pirates will go check out anything that explodes randomly (Good ol’ C4 is good for this) or go stare at a brush fire for minutes on end (Molotov or Fire Arrows help with this.) This should give you time to go after the alarms and disable them. You could shoot the alarms from a far, but shooting an alarm will only disable that one specific alarm. Walking up and disabling an alarm will screw all the alarms up for one outpost. Much yummier tactic. Also, its worth noting that taking outposts undetected gives extra experience points and helps unlock a certain skill for the stealth-wise practitioner. Yet, an even easier way to knock out enemy outposts, if you’re lucky, is to keep an eye out for any animal cages within. Shooting a cage’s door that holds a bear or a jungle kitty will free the animal and let it run bloody-muck on the outpost. Quite amusing to watch from a safe distance. Kill and skin the animal once it has feasted on your enemies.
That pirate said that he wants you to “Take him down” lulz… - This can be arguable, but it worked wonders for my ammo, experience points, and save me a lot of aggravation. Learn the ‘Take Down’ skills! Aside from being wonderfully pleasing to watch, ‘take downs’ help a lot when pulled off. Each one of the three skill-trees in the game has at least one of these ‘Take Down’ skills that can help make killing enemies so much easier than dickin’ around a gun fight with them. The stronger skills let you take down multiple enemies at once while other ‘take downs’ help with stealth superiority…But all of them are fun to execute, especially in first-person. Want to jump down and knife a pirate from above, take his pistol from his holster and cap two others next to him, ‘Taken style’? If you can chain these take downs perfectly together…it is awesomely possible and doing so will reward you with extra experience points, save your ammo, and help you quickly finish missions or take an outpost. My favorite was the ‘Grenade Take Down’. Its just pure Hollywood bliss; knifing an enemy, then pulling the pin on his own grenade right before kicking his body towards an enemy vehicle. In first-person shooter mode this is… Hollywood. Action. Bliss.
Paradise? Yeah bloody right. - This isn’t a tip that really helps with survival, but im listing it anyway: Have fun! This game is well designed with a beautiful setting and so designed for you to explore and have fun with it. They don’t call it an open-world game for no reason. Try out each mini game, from Poker to knife throwing competitions. Try and find every vehicle and ride the f*ck out of it. Buy different guns and use them. Do the most you can. Its a bummer that Farcry 3 released a bit too late for year-end video game rewards, but as long as it gets played…thats all that should count, really.

I will be out of step (with the rest of world)…even more so.

In 2006 I chose my vegetarian lifestyle. I did it for health, political, social, environmental, and idealistic reasons. Almost 7 years later i still feel i live a life without control. Although so much has come out of it and out of my fight against my own depression and anxiety the last couple of years, I have finally learned that it takes so much more courage to accept it rather than to fight against it.

Recent events in my home and family life, and from what i keep reading on my facebook contacts, have showed me that the only real way to live good is to have a healthy clean way of life. I have concluded that i have to declare this and that i have to follow through..with fierce courage.

Tomorrow, i will start a Straight Edge livelihood.

Because the definition differs a lot, I need to know, tell, and remind what it is i am giving up in order to abide by this difficult way of life. Doing so to you, friends and family, is the most perfect way to do this. As it will reinforce what i need to do, or more accurately, what it is i need NOT do anymore.

For those who don’t know. Straight Edge focuses around self-control. It is abstinence from any substance and narcotic that alters the way the mind and body work. This includes Alcohol, Marijuana, Tobacco, prescription drugs, and Caffeine. But it doesn’t stop there. Being Straight Edge is more vastly considered to be a revolution of the mind, body, and soul. Where living aware and living clean come together. Thus, I will incorporate my vegetarianism and the following into this new way of life.

1. No drugs - Any substance that alters the way my body and mind work are now completely gone from my life.

2. No promiscuous sex/relations - One girl, one love for me…always.

3. Be conscious about health - Keep my vegetarianism going strong. Health comes first. Eat healthy and exercise.

4. Self-Awareness - Think for myself and speak my mind. Become independent and aware about what is happening around me and around the world. Be strong and never self- sacrifice myself and who i am.

5. Live clean - Keep my mind, body, and soul clean of social ills like; violence, racism, greed, and other counter progressions.

6. Stay positive - Pessimism only hurts. Let go of all the drama and those who create it.

7. Influence and tolerate others - I cannot badger others to see my way. I must be able to tolerate those who disagree with me. This can help to influence them in a positive manner.

8. Stay productive - Both artistically and creatively. This will be food for my soul. My artwork will help me identify myself, to myself.

9. Be a good person all around - See friends and family. I will be there for them as they will be there for me.

10. Never forget who I am and where I come from.

2012 Video game buylist

Lately, both friends and family have come to me with the question, “I want to buy a video game, (for my boyfriend/Girlfriend, me, family, dog, squirtle…ect.) but whats a good one to get?” And they usually catch me with this question at the worst possible time. I respond with a blank stare. My mind goes blank. I stare at them like they’re a bear.

SO…i compiled a small list for those who want to buy games for the holidays, er, whatever.

Take note: This list consists of games I HAVE PLAYED and are in no particular rank or rating.

1. Skyrim (PS3, Xbox 360, and PC) - What haven’t i said about this game? Enticing, immersible, traditional in its own sense. Skyrim is a cold, harsh world filled with lore, danger, adventure, and reward. You can literally spend 100’s of hours on this game and still not discover all of its treasures. It truly is a mark point of what video games have become today, HUGE, dagger sharp graphics, leading story, and design that will make your breathe cold, your arms shiver, and make you want to play with a nice warm Nord coat around you. Dragons, swords, magic, character development, memorable music, beautiful environments, and fun! With DLC (Downloadable Content) already out to make this game more enormous than it already is and another DLC on the way… This game should keep you busy for DAAAAAAAYS.

2. Borderlands 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) - A very entertaining shooter that you do not need to have played the first to enjoy! Unconventional humor and dialogue, charismatic villains and anti-heroes, colorful environments, and guns. guns. guns. guns!!! This game gets you hooked on guns and skill sets for your character. You get to chose from 4 (5 if you get the Mechromancer DLC) classes, each with their own special ability that you can tweek to your liking as your progress. The incentive? Loot! Kill and loot, kill and loot. This game is all about progressing the story, progressing your character, and hording anything you possibly can to give you that sharper edge against the enemy. Speaking of which; the villain, Handsome Jack, does not make your journey easy or even ambiguous. He is cold, harsh, evil, and he looks good doing it like that. All the more reason to find the perfect sniper rifle and/or rocket launcher to smoke his ass back where he came from.

3. Journey (PS3/Playstation Network) - Hmmm…how to describe this little beauty of an independent game called, Journey? Beautiful! hahaha… This game is simply and marvelously beautiful. Profound and infinite. Naive and wise. This game captures what video games need more these days, a little bit of love. It is difficult to describe it because it is very different than what mainstream games usually feed to us. There is no menu, there are no weapons. No maps or compasses. There is no dialogue and no text. In Journey there is only companionship, struggle and destination. This game has amazing art direction even though it is simple. It moves you with music and visuals that may only come in dreams. It tells a story that was lost but has never been. It just reeks of what independent games make you want to do…and that’s hug your TV screen. This game will always be with me. The bummer is, this game is very short. But if you look at it from a film critic’s point of view, the game is exactly the perfect length. $15 for the game from the Playstation Network..not bad at all. Flawless.

4. XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PS3, XBOX 360, PC) - This is a rad turn-based strategy game with lots to do! You are the Commander of XCOM, a secret government project directed as earth’s first and last defense against a very difficult extraterrestrial threat. As Commander you decide how to build, combat, and progress in an outgunned war. You have much to learn about your enemy and your limited resources are to be used up in either research, engineering, weapons, global defense, or on your troops. You decide what is the best way to gain the upper hand on both the battlefield and your headquarters. You WILL have soldiers die under your command, and you WILL have to use your brain to gain tactical advantage. Good luck, squaddie :D

5. The Mass Effect Trilogy (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) - Pure sci-fi grandeur. This trilogy is more than just three games. There are so many games that call for a hero that needs to save the galaxy, over and over. So many games that you can call clones to that formula. Nothing comes close to the Mass Effect story and its characters. The series is very character and story driven. So much that the game has sprouted out almost a whole culture filled with fans and a universe that holds this opus always close to the heart. Memorable characters will entice sympathy, love, compassion, and hate. This a story you play spanning three games and the decisions you make in one game will carry over to the next. It is a trilogy you-yourself can make and it is not without a whole universe to explore. Don’t miss out on Mass Effect.

6. Portal 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC) - Simple physics; fast in, fast out. This is how the Portal series affects space and time, or more importantly, how it does not. You are a test subject for a self relying science facility ran by a hilarious diabolical A.I. known as GLaDOS. Her job is to use you. To test you. And to break you. This game is designed with witty humor, fantastic puzzle design, and quick paced action sequences that get your heart and mind going. Like the first Portal, you have a nifty portal gun that shoots both the ‘In’ and ‘Out’ points between space and time, except this time around…you will experience other elements in the brain busting rooms you must get out of. Gravity defying beams, friction ooze, matter changing paint and more…all for the name of science, duh. Oh yeah, there’s co-op now, so you can play with a bud. NOTE: You don’t really need to, but i still I recommend playing the first Portal before this one. FOR SCIENCE!

7. The ICO and The Shadow of the Colossus Collection (PS3 Only) - OK…So i kind of did save the best for last. Initially these two games were released on the Playstation 2. The developers re-released them with HD revamps for the fanbase who cried out for them dearly under one collection for the PS3. These two games are very, very unique. Poetic, appalling, maybe even timeless. Both games are settings for a beautiful world where love seems to be forbidden, but love is the only way to get through. Both games are adventures through hardship, struggle, and companionship. This collection ranks among my favorite of all time. I wanted to share that with you so you may know that video games can truly be an amazing art form.

Watched a foreign movie called, “Medianeras” (Sidewalls), 2011. Its sort of a magical realistic love story holding about and within the interest of our lives, strangeness, likeness, solitude, character, architecture, music, chance, off chance, disorders, technology, and some hope.

I didnt think i was going to like it. I ended up loving it. Check it out.

I cant believe what just happened. Did i really play that just now? Under 2 hours i beat it? Was it a dream; a fantastic, magical, play through of discovery and struggle? Im still shaking…my heart is still pumping, fast. My Journey ended and I want to show everyone what it was like.

Ill keep it simple. If you’re on the Playstation Network, Journey is a must download. Once every few years a game comes out that it is so appealing, so original, and so unique; it explodes with artistic expression and changes the way gamers see games…or anyone else for that matter.

When i read a preview, a year ago on Journey, I felt like it was a nice change of concept. Last month, i read reviews and saw it had great acclaim; snatching several Game of the Month honors from websites and magazine outlets. So i finally hopped onto the Playstation Network and purchased Journey. I had little idea what i just bought. Little idea what i was about to play through.

Journey is simple. From the very beginning you find your cloaked character alone in the middle of vast desert. Far beyond is a pillar of light on top of a distant mountain; your destination. Game play is simple. You can move, jump, and chirp a musical chime that seems to be your only form of communication. Thats it. No guns, swords, or vehicles. No map icons, health displays, no radars, life bars, or menus. Just you and a great journey that is about to blow your mind…away.

After traveling a while, you come to a spot where it seems that the only way you can progress is with a little help. And what do you know? Another hooded figure like yourself, in the distance, hops to co-op along with you. You meet a fellow friend, and yes its another player. The game is uniquely designed to connect to other players anonymously and randomly. There is no text options, there is no voice chat, there are no game invites. Only the musical chirp your character plays can be used as a tool of communication (When i found my first fellow mate, we spent minutes musically “singing” back and forth to each other, it was amazing). You have no idea who this other traveler is. You only know that you have help now, and your Journey is not going to be completed alone.

This is very important. The developers designed the game to hook you up with a co-op player and give you very little to communicate with each other. Its important because you need to help each other to progress and this kind of shy team work leads and turns into a strong bond between you and the other traveler. From here on, you will struggle together and glide together, compelled, helping, and striving. Every Journey costs something. Like others before you; you will discover, together, a magnificent ride of beautiful shots, amazing music, a grand unique world, and at the end…your destination.

I love the game. Its an unforgettable multiplayer experience. At times when my co-op player was in trouble, i would fear for the worst. You find yourselves in plenty of exciting and harsh situations. At another point i broke off from my fellow traveler thinking nothing of it, but as soon as i heard danger, i quickly looked for my fellow journeyman for comfort. Just knowing he was still around made me feel better and safer; safer to know you’re not alone and that someone is with you on your Journey is a very good thing. A couple times, i did find myself alone. Much like the beginning, i felt helpless, in need, and I constantly wondered where my companion went off to, or if he/she was ever coming back. Other times you cant help but to awe together at the majesty of such great art direction, its all very stunning, and the game is clearly designed to be experienced with someone. Even if that someone is a total stranger, or maybe because of that reason, the game shines fantastically.

The game will be with me forever. It may have lasted less than two hours, but Journey will always be in my heart. Its video games like this that i think can show everyone that they are just as strong in expression, if not stronger, than other mediums.

What makes this game so rad: Awesome original score/breathtaking visuals/emotionally pleasing and a very special story/unique adventure coupled with great art direction/it’s very very climatic

The down parts of the game: missing out on it/maybe too short of an adventure for some/replay value is low once played through/did i mention to not miss out on this game? Cause i probably should; don’t miss out on Journey/Sadly, Journey is a Playstation 3 exclusive. Lets hope fan petitions get the developers to release it on other platforms.

Pass me by, morning. Morning of bitter sunlight and blue cars. Morning of glow over the orange hills of avocado and grape truths.

Another dawn to deal with. A dawn with tasteless cold cereal holding drowned souls, washing them on to the pavements, the turf, and the endless roads that lead to solitude chained fences and ever growing front lawns.

I walk to you under the stoplights that holds everyone and tells them to move faster or die faster, or even just waste away faster with their lives and the lives of others, as they listen and comply.

High, just so high. So high the bland grass with the petty signs of delusional vibrations that only shake the shins of those with pitch fork partners and acidic coughs in the solid air.

It surrounds the weight of us all. The pure true weight that moves us toward log cabins of teachers, the English women, the number speaking vice presidents and their marching bands of delight music for war, endless habitual unfairness, endless paper of sacred plain fields. Endless futures.

My queen doesn’t see this. My king doesn’t see. The piled monarchs of piled bodies, they don’t ever see this.

See the strings that aren’t tied, or wrapped, just hooked into skin and soul. Pulling and dragging forward marionettes of tears, dwelling innards, fucking turmoil, fucking uniforms that lead and don’t smile. See guns worn as crowns, snap shots displayed as insane year book dilemmas.

See the gargantuan holy oblivious tenement, so sure, so elliptical and sure, that it confides to us, the holy child of dank, relieving sloth, greed, underage sex, underage sodomy.

See the wax mermaids swimming in hell hot phallocentric, salacious, stew. See them bathing in it, in tight clothing, in the nude, with partners, and more partners. See them not laugh, see them turn downed.

See the cops beating the blind till they see awkward and askewed. They hold her up, as she pushes and licks them down. Kicks down their housing departments. Burns down their revenue of property tax pornography. Offers them abuse and strange tongue. See the cops tremble with fear, and fear they worship.

See the child become the hunted. The prey at last seen, touched, forced down paths of recklessness, unable light houses, the paper touch and shameful touch. See the child gone.

See the new American gangster. He’s proud to die for his country and country men. Much like the church going choir is proud, the relative is proud, elusive death is proud. See him export ash that makes the human child jingle, places human adolescence off the fucking map, and holds the human adult a hostage to itself. See the gangster beat the street, much like the cop, beat to the beat and raise la la land to a new way of living. Living in crack house jurisdictions, public pools of methamphetamine, fear mongering on walls and paint.

See the lovers joining turn into dust from the very beginning. Not knowing, not caring, only adding to the solution made to work one way but not the other. Adding to famine, pests, joy, and the same habitual unfairness. The same family tragedy that will undoubtedly occur to bastard children that come from foster farms to foster offices, to foster city halls, to foster drug dealers, foster alcoholics, and a fostered life.

I ask if this will change. That the sure, secluded wealthy man will follow through in rage from their golf courses and liberal tamed landscape backyards, jump over fences and show the gangster, the wives, our brothers and sisters, and the nuclear life a different posting of sharing and density that works. Tell me that the paper back writers of paper back bills and federal girders will jump out like super heroes and post up will, rationality, and something for our people. Something we can eat, and live off of.

My city, tell me i will survive the unfairness, the powerlessness, the void, and bondage of every other city, building, those in them, and all that they place upon altars of lost and claimed and lost again freedom.

That same great freedom i see in you.
